the ape seemed genuinely surprised at the tricks! it must have a sense of what is and is not logically possible! i think it may have even figured out that handkerchief-through-the-ears gag.

This is "genius chimp" Pan-kun. he has a regular segment on a show called Shimura Zoo. There's a lot of video of him and his bulldog friend James on YT. Funny stuff. And he's a CHIMPANZEE not a monkey.

The ape seems like he got some training, even though he is smart to do all these react

Awwwww... that is soo cuteee.... But you know it's the subtitle and the sound effect that makes it seem as cute as it is... Otherwise, it'll just be blah.

that monkey is so well trained that the monkey has more manners than me

It seemed to me the chimp had very good relationships with his trainers or he wouldn't have put up with all that crap. Chimps, like 3 year old children, do have an understanding of object permanency, the idea that things don't go away just because they're hidden, and most of the illusions involved that idea. The poor fellow has probably spent years with humans playing hide the grape only to have them change the rules. It clearly rocked his world, between every joke that mocked the laws of physics as he knows them he clung to the trainers as his world crumbled. What a good tempered fellow, to watch his trainer stabbed in the neck and still maintain stage presence.

If I was the chimp after a couple of tricks, I'd kick laughing boy's ass.

I didn't realize Pan-kun was still on TV. After that one chimp attack of a year or so ago, all I can think about is how Pan-kun will be as an ugly adult chimp. ^_^;;;;;

I actually watched this episode in Japan. Oh I love Pankun. He has a dog named James too. xD
